Evidence shows diet soda makes you fat

Low fat, low carb, sugar free, and diet soda beverages have been introduced to the general public as a better, healthier option that will help you manage your weight. People from all over the country swapped those full fat, high carb, sugary products with lower calorie alternatives, believing that they found the solution for the raising number on the scale. However, new evidence show that trading your daily soda with diet soda, is not the key for weight loss, but quite the opposite.

Diet soda has long been held up as a beacon of hope for those seeking to drop a few pounds and manage their weight. Americas most favorite beverage companies had to come up with a creative marketing strategy to continue selling their products to the increasingly weight-conscious public. And they indeed find a way. In the last quarter of a century, consumption of diet sodas has skyrocketed, with about 30 percent of Americans drinking sodas containing artificial-sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose and saccharin. According to AlterNet Americans have even felt they are counteracting otherwise calorie-filled meals by drinking these calorie-free beverages.

But what does that really mean?

If losing weight were just about calories in verses calories out, then consuming diet drinks would seem like a good idea. But the science behind artificial sweeteners doesn’t support that logic. As a matter if fact, evidence show that consuming diet soda may be worse than having us all drink regular soda. The idea that diet drinks are better for you is nothing but a marketing propaganda.

According to Fitness Magazine, epidemiologists from the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio recently reported at the American Diabetes Association’s Scientific Sessions that constant diet soda consumption is directly associated with increased waist circumference in humans.

But why does something with zero calories still have the ability to make you gain weight?

Researchers say that the artificial sweeteners have an addictive affect on the brain that is harsher that the addictive affects of regular sugar. Our brains know when we eat or drink something that has artificial products in it, causing our bodies to produce more insulin to make up for it, which blocks the ability to burn fat, and makes us crave more sweets.

Considering the evidence, the best thing for you to do if you consume diet sodas, is to stop drinking diet soda and all artificially sweetened drinks starting right now. The problem is, sweeteners are a staple in the American diet, so do yourself a favor and always read the ingredients of whatever it is you consume. Given a choice, drink plain water instead of soda. You can add a slice of lemon, lime or orange to brighten up the flavor. Other healthier alternatives to soda include seltzer water and fresh juice (and we are talking fresh squeezed here, not the store bought varieties). Just remember, that if you drinks diet sodas and your pants are getting tighter, now you know why.
